چکیده
20 Rapid and flexible interpretation of conflicting sensory inputs in the context of current 21 goals is a critical component of cognitive control that is orchestrated by frontal cortex. 22 The relative roles of distinct subregions within frontal cortex are poorly understood. To 23 examine the dynamics underlying cognitive control across frontal regions, we took 24 advantage of the spatiotemporal resolution of intracranial recordings in epilepsy patients 25 while subjects resolved color-word conflict. We observed differential activity preceding 26 the behavioral responses to conflict trials throughout frontal cortex; this activity was 27 correlated with behavioral reaction times. These signals emerged first in anterior 28 cingulate cortex (ACC) before dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), followed by medial 29 frontal cortex (mFC) and then by orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). These results disassociate 30 the frontal subregions based on their dynamics, and suggest a temporal hierarchy for 31 cognitive control in human cortex.

متن کاملTracking the temporal dynamics of updating cognitive control: an examination of error processing.
In 2 experiments, we used event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to examine the temporal dynamics of neural processes related to adjustments of cognitive control following errors in the counting Stroop task. The ERPs elicited by errors revealed the error-related negativity (ERN) and error positivity consistent with a large body of literature. In addition, errors were associated with a frontal sl...
متن کاملTrait anxiety and the neural efficiency of manipulation in working memory
The present study investigates the effects of trait anxiety on the neural efficiency of working memory component functions (manipulation vs. maintenance) in the absence of threat-related stimuli. For the manipulation of affectively neutral verbal information held in working memory, high- and low-anxious individuals (N = 46) did not differ in their behavioral performance, yet trait anxiety was p...
متن کاملCo-localization of Stroop and Syntactic Ambiguity Resolution in Broca's Area: Implications for the Neural Basis of Sentence Processing
For over a century, a link between left prefrontal cortex and language processing has been accepted, yet the precise characterization of this link remains elusive. Recent advances in both the study of sentence processing and the neuroscientific study of frontal lobe function suggest an intriguing possibility: The demands to resolve competition between incompatible characterizations of a linguis...
متن کاملHypnosis decouples cognitive control from conflict monitoring processes of the frontal lobe.
Hypnosis can profoundly alter sensory awareness and cognitive processing. While the cognitive and behavioral phenomena associated with hypnosis have long been thought to relate to attentional processes, the neural mechanisms underlying susceptibility to hypnotic induction and the hypnotic condition are poorly understood. Here, we tested the proposal that highly hypnotizable individuals are part...
